Alexander Shevchenko

Aleksandr Shevchenko was a Ukrainian-born modernist painter, sculptor and art theorist active in Moscow. He trained at the Stroganov Academy and the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, and in 1912 exhibited with the Donkey's Tail group alongside Larionov and Goncharova. In 1913 he published two influential theoretical texts, 'Neo-primitivism' and 'The Principles of Cubism,' championing the spontaneity of Russian folk art and the lubok print tradition, and he went on to teach at VKhUTEMAS and other Moscow art institutes for three decades.
